League Cup: Villa lose again while Grimsby serve up another shock

Aston Villa’s poor start to the season continued with a League Cup defeat at Brentford, while League Two side Grimsby Town backed up their win over Manchester United with victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Mariners are in the hat for the fourth round thanks to a goal from Jaze Kabia against the troubled Owls – whose fans boycotted the match in continued protest at the club’s ownership.

Kabia headed in from a corner to put the lower league side into the fourth round for the first time since the 2001-2 season.

Villa took the lead against the Bees with their first goal of the season when Harvey Elliott capitalised on some slack play at the back to fire in.

But Scottish full-back Aaron Hickey levelled with a cracking volley to send the tie to penalties.

John McGinn and Matty Cash had their penalties saved by Hakon Valdimarsson and the Bees won the shootout 4-2.

Crystal Palace – last year’s FA Cup winners – also hahd to go to a shootout after Millwall equalised in the last minute and force a 1-1 draw.

Chris Richards had put the Eagles ahead only for Ryan Leonard to flick in a corner for the Championship side.

However, Walter Benitez saved from Tristan Crama and Aidomo Emakhu on his debut for the club to send the Premier League side through.
