Karim Benzema draws level with Robert Lewandowski in Real Madrid's win over Alaves

The remarkable individual campaign being enjoyed by Real Madrid star Karim Benzema continued on Saturday, as the Frenchman drew level with Bayern Munich counterpart Robert Lewandowski atop an impressive category across Europe's top-5 leagues.

'Benz' was afforded his latest start a short time ago, leading the line for Carlo Ancelotti's Real in a La Liga showdown with Deportivo Alaves.

Los Blancos headed into proceedings eyeing a swift return to winning ways, after slipping to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League Last-16 tie between the clubs during the week.

And, when all was said and done at the Bernabeu, emerge with all three points is precisely what the hosts managed.

The aforementioned Karim Benzema, almost inevitably, proved the star of the show, laying on an assist for Vinicius Junior before finding the net himself from the penalty spot, en route to a 3-0 final scoreline.

And, as alluded to above, in the process of notching his latest pair of goal involvements, Real's talisman joined an altogether exclusive club.

As per statisticians Opta, Benzema's 27 direct goal involvements in La Liga this season mark the joint-most of any player across Europe's top-5 leagues, alongside Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski:

Blancos inch towards glory

Turning attentions towards the title race in the Spanish top-flight, Real Madrid's latest triumph has seen the capital giants take another step towards wrestling back their crown from city rivals Atletico.

Ancelotti's troops now boast a 7-point lead atop the La Liga table.

2nd-placed Sevilla, though, will be understandably keen to reduce this gap to just four points once more tomorrow afternoon, when Julen Lopetegui's men make the trip to Cornella for a showdown with Espanyol.
