Jurgen Klopp defends critics of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland

Jurgen Klopp has moved to defend Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland following criticism of the pair.

Both Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez have faced heavy criticism during their short time in England.

Nunez was the but of the joke on social media after missing a few big chances in pre-season.

But Jurgen Klopp has backed Nunez and suggested people are too quick to judge players:

“Five weeks ago, when we started pre-season and he had his first game and it didn’t look great from the outside world,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “Not for us, but it’s crazy how quick we judge people… wow!

Erling Haaland, meanwhile, was mocked by rival fans after not scoring vs Liverpool in the Community Shield and Klopp has also defended the Norwegian:

“It’s funny as well, we won against Manchester City the week before the season and everybody was asking, ‘will Haaland score this and that?’,” Klopp stated. “A week is like 10 years in football!”

Following their slightly slow starts, both Haaland and Nunez have hit the ground running in the Premier League.

The latter netted two vs West Ham in gameweek one and provided an assist on Saturday vs Bournemouth.

Nunez, meanwhile, came off the bench vs Fulham to help Liverpool salvage a draw – scoring one and assisting one.

The South American is now expected to start for Liverpool on Monday evening vs Crystal Palace.
