Man United’s defensive woes
Over the 2018 summer transfer window it was clear Jose Mourinho wanted to sign a central defender.
Manchester United were heavily linked with both Yerry Mina, who instead joined Everton and Toby Alderweireld who stayed at Tottenham.
As a result, United have begun the 2018/19 season with a serious centre-back problem.
That problem was on clear display in United’s last game vs Southampton as United had to start the game with Scott McTominay, a centre mid, in at centre-back.
It is also clear Man United have no real leader in the centre-back role.
This is evident by the fact United have conceded 23 goals in 14 Premier League games this season.
This is the worst defensive record of the current top 15 Premier League teams.
Manchester United bid £91m for Napoli’s Koulibaly
Given their defensive frailties, it is no surprise United are being linked with centre-backs heading into the January window.
One big name defender United are being linked with is Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Kalidou Koulibaly has played 182 games across all competitions for Napoli, in which he has scored eight and assisted six.
Man United are said to have bid somewhere in the region of £91 million for Koulibaly.
However, when asked if United had indeed bid for the Napoli defender, Jose Mourinho gave a pretty vague response:
“I cannot answer to your question.
“If is true, if is not true, I cannot answer to your question, maybe your question is the first one about the market and maybe the next press conference I have two more questions, and maybe the next press conference I have three more.
“The only thing I can tell you is Koulibaly is a Napoli player. And I don’t speak about players from other clubs.”
