Joao Cancelo speaks out over his future position & how Pep Guardiola has developed his game

Joao Cancelo has been discussing how he is used for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

The Portuguese did not have a great start to life at Man City following his switch from Juventus, but the last few years have seen Cancelo become one of the best full-backs in the game.

Cancelo was a natural right-back, but he is now primarily used on the left and is also often tasked with coming inside to partner Rodri in midfield.

When discussing his role recently, he said: “Moving inside feels natural now. Pep has developed that side of my game.

“It means taking on a different type of responsibility. Stopping the opponent’s counter-attacks is another aspect of the game that is very important when I am playing inside.”

Cancelo also suggested he could become a winger on a midfielder in the future: “I don’t think centre-forward but maybe I could become a winger, maybe I could play as a midfielder.

“At the end of the day, it will be the manager’s decision where I play. Wherever he puts me on the pitch I will give my best. That is the secret of this team. Man City as a group, we pull together. The result of that can be seen in our success.”

Cancelo’s next outing comes vs Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.
