‘If anybody says Trent can’t defend they can come to me’: Fabinho hits out at Liverpool teammates’ critics

Fabinho has been sticking up for Trent Arnold in a recent interview.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defensive issues has been clear for all to see this season.

Trent’s biggest issue this season has been his positioning and his poor defending in 1v1s.

On numerous occasions this campaign, Alexander-Arnold has been pushed high up the pitch, leaving space in behind for the opposition to counter.

His movement has also been pretty static and when he does get 1v1 with a player, he generally losses the duel.

Jurgen Klopp has tried to counteract this by having James Milner or another midfielder playing on the right of a three drop back and help provide cover down Liverpool’s right.

This has worked on occasion vs the likes of Napoli. But for the most part we have seen TAA heavily exposed.

He said: “Apart from the diagonal balls to Martinelli which Trent defended incredibly, the boy Martinelli is such a talented boy, really tricky and if anybody says Trent can’t defend they can come to me and I will knock them down because I cannot hear that anymore, I don’t know what the boy has to do!”

Alexander-Arnold’s defensive ability will be tested at the World Cup if he starts a game with Harry Maguire, Eric Dier and John Stones at centre-back.
