How Tottenham’s summer transfer budget could be affected by Cristian Romero & Dejan Kulusevski

One of the main reasons Tottenham went from Champions League finalists to Europa Conference League contenders was their poor spending.

However, since the arrival of Fabio Paratici, Spurs have begun to make some smarter moves in the market.

Two of the best examples of this come from the Serie A in the form of Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski.

Romero has slotted seamlessly into Antonio Conte’s back five, whilst Kulusevski is the final piece of Tottenham’s now lethal attacking trident.

Romero & Kulusevski to eat into Tottenham’s summer budget

However, neither player has actually been signed on a permanent deal by the Lilywhites yet.

Tottenham do have the option to make both moves permanent this summer and it is expected they will do so.

Well, football.london’s Alasdair Gold has explained that here: “Making both Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski’s moves permanent will have to be taken into account of course. That’s almost £70million that Spurs will have to pay out this summer and they will do so because every penny is absolutely worth it.

“However, it’s clear chairman Daniel Levy will have to find more money because there is plenty more work to be done and both Antonio Conte and Harry Kane will need to be convinced that next season will be something special.

“Tottenham’s worst possible mistake would be to see what Conte has achieved and assume he doesn’t need much more. They made that mistake under Mauricio Pochettino and it’s part of the reason Spurs fell into the mess they did. The transfer budget will of course be dictated by whether Spurs finish in the top four or not, but even if they don’t it needs to be a summer of ambition, not simply making do.

“That doesn’t mean they have to spend incredible amounts, it means they have to spend cleverly. January proved Paratici can pick the right players for Conte and at a manageable costs and this summer whether the targets are big money, small money or even right, the key is that they’re Conte players.”
