How new Covid-19 variant could impact Manchester United’s meeting with Young Boys

Manchester United vs Young Boys

Manchester United’s final Champions League group stage clash of the seaosn takes place on Wednesday the 8th of December.

Man United, after picking up a 2-0 win over Villarreal in their last European outing, having already secured passage into the knockout rounds.

However, top spot in Group F is still currently up for grabs. So, to ensure they secure 1st place, Man United need at least a draw to guarantee they finish above Villarreal.

Man United game could be impacted by Covid-19

Ahead of the game, though, concern has spread that Man United and Young Boys may need to play their clash in a neutral country following the outbreak of the Omicron variant.

As per the Telegraph:

There are fears the Omicron variant of coronavirus will force Manchester United to play their final Champions League group game against Young Boys next week in a neutral country.

The variant was first reported to the World Health Organisation on November 24th from South Africa and has already seemingly had an impact on the footballing world.

And, after a Belenenses player returned from South Africa and tested positive for covid, the club’s squad was hit hard and would eventually be forced to abandon their match with Benfica this past weekend, which they had to start with just nine men anyway because of the virus.

Now, the Telegraph report that UEFA have been on Monday urgently seeking clarity from the Swiss government over whether Young Boys would need to quarantine for 10 days upon returning from a match in the UK.

If they do need to quarantine, under UEFA rules, their game against United must be moved – if possible – to a neutral country:
