How Mikel Arteta put Gabriel off for Wolves goal vs Arsenal

Arsenal played out a Premier League clash on Thursday evening. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal faced off with Wolves in a must-win tie for the Gunners.

Arsenal headed into the game outside of the top-four but were well aware that they had three games in hand on Manchester United, two of which they needed to win to ensure they were able to knock the Red Devils out of the Champions League places.

Things did not get off to a great start for Arsenal, however. They would have a good penalty shout waved away after less than a minute before falling behind 10 minutes into the clash.

Arsenal went in level at the break and were looking unlikely to secure a point, never mind a win.

However, the introduction of Nicolas Pepe after 71 minutes transformed the tie. Pepe brought Arsenal back on level terms after 82 minutes before setting up Arsenal’s second deep in injury time:

How Mikel Arteta caused Gabriel mistake vs Wolves

As shown in the highlights above, it would be a mistake on the part of Gabriel that led to Wolves’ first goal.

However, as pointed out by football.lonndon, Gabriel’s decision to pass the ball back to Aaron Ramsdale was heavily influenced by Mikel Arteta:

‘The Brazilian defender was at fault for giving Wolves the lead with a wayward backpass to Aaron Ramsdale that Hwang Hee-Chan could seize on, although in fairness to him he could hardly have been helped by his manager's shouts of "yes Gabby, keeper" from the touchline as he fended off pressure from Raul Jimenez.’
