Former Arsenal star advises Aubameyang to leave ‘average’ Gunners as Man United urged to swoop

Ex-Arsenal standout Emmanuel Petit has revealed his opinion that, for the good of his career, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should seek a summer departure from the Emirates.

Auba’s expiring deal

One of the key talking points surrounding Arsenal’s squad, for some time now, has centered on the contract situation of star striker Aubameyang.

Since his big-money arrival from Borussia Dortmund in January of 2018, Gabonese international Aubameyang has gone on to establish himself as the Gunners’ most important player.

This is evidenced by the 30-year-old’s impressive strike rate of just under 2 goals every 3 games in the club’s colours.

As such, it has come as a major source of concern for fans of the north Londoners that, with just a year remaining on his current contract, little progress has been made towards tying Aubameyang down to a new deal.

Speaking earlier this month, the prolific attacker appeared to pin the blame on Arsenal for the standstill in negotiations between the two parties:

‘We have had exchanges with the club, for a fair few months now. And they know very well why so far nothing has happened,’ Aubameyang explained during an interview with Telefoot.

‘They have the keys. It’s up to them to do their work and after that we will see how things go.’

‘Not the same any more’

As outlined above, though, if one of the club’s former stars was in Aubameyang’s position at present, he would not hesitate in seeking out a departure as soon as possible.

The individual in question is Emmanuel Petit.

Speaking in an interview with Paddy Power earlier today, Petit, who lined out for the Gunners from 1997 to 2000, was drawn on the predicament facing Arsenal’s star man.

And the Frenchman went on to advise Aubameyang, in no uncertain terms, to move on:

‘If I were Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, I would leave Arsenal. There is some quality in this team but when you arrive at the club nowadays you want to do great things. But, come on guys, Arsenal is not the same any more.’

Petit continued:

‘It’s becoming an average club. I feel so sorry for the fans and all the people who love the club. I feel sorry for the former players that try to uphold the Arsenal reputation.’

‘But I don’t feel sorry for the players – I think 75% of them at the club at the moment don’t deserve to wear that shirt. They should look at themselves in the mirror and show some pride.’ Quotes via Goal.

‘Join United’

Interestingly, just 24 hours prior to Petit’s comments coming to light, another former Premier League player also suggested that Aubameyang should seek out an Emirates exit.

On this occasion, though, the ex-star in question went as far as to name the club whom he feels the African should join.

Speaking to Compare Bet yesterday, Louis Saha name-dropped Manchester United as an ideal landing spot for Aubameyang this summer (though the 41-year-old’s Red Devils ties appear to have played a somewhat significant role in his advice):

‘Arsenal fans may not like this, but I’d like him to join United, I’d be very happy with that [laughter]. I’m sure Arsenal fans would not take that well, but that’s my advice to Auba.’
