Erik ten Hag told he made ‘very stupid’ Manchester United decision

Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has hit out at Erik ten Hag for what he has labelled a ‘very stupid’ decision.

Van Der Vaart is referring to Ten Hag’s decision to keep Casemiro on the bench for Manchester United’s meeting with Manchester City.

Scott McTominay began 2022/23 as Manchester United’s main defensive midfielder, as the Red Devils had no other options when the campaign kicked off.

Casemiro was then signed from Real Madrid, and it was expected the Brazilian would slot straight into the team as United have been crying out for a proper no.6 for several years.

However, after McTominay had a good start to the season, Ten Hag opted to continue starting the Scotsman over Casemiro.

He did so once again at the weekend when Manchester City put six past Manchester United.

United’s biggest problem area on the day was their midfield, with Christian Eriksen not tracking his runners well enough and McTominay just generally having an awful game.

Now, Van Der Vaart has hit out at Erik ten Hag for not starting Casemiro straight away:

“Ten Hag should have started playing Casemiro straight away,” Van Der Vaart said while analysing the game for Dutch television. “McTominay starts performing and Man United start winning and then of course he can’t put McTominay out of the team anymore.

“I find this very stupid from him because you are creating your own problem.”
