De Gea to start season opener? Man United confirm Henderson omission for Scotland training camp

Manchester United have, on Monday, confirmed that Dean Henderson will not be present on the club’s upcoming tour of Scotland.

Sancho in/Varane to follow?

Those on the red half of Manchester are currently ramping up preparations for the new season.

To this point in the summer, the vast majority of the chatter surrounding ongoings at Old Trafford has of course centered on the club’s efforts on the transfer front.

This comes with the Red Devils having finally pushed a deal for Jadon Sancho over the line, before turning their attentions firmly towards reinforcements at the back – in the form of Raphael Varane.

‘Training again soon’

Back at the club’s Carrington training base, though, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already hard at work, putting those at his disposal through their paces, ahead of what could prove to be a make-or-break term for the Norwegian in Manchester.

The coming week, meanwhile, will see United’s squad make their way to Scotland for a final pre-season training camp, before getting their campaign underway in a high-profile meeting with Leeds United on August 14th.

In turn, decisions will soon need to be made by the Reds’ boss, when it comes to his first-choice XI.

The likes of Scott McTominay, Mason Greenwood and new signing Jadon Sancho will be amongst those hopeful of clinching an opening day berth in Solskjaer’s line-up.

The most widely discussed of the Norwegian’s impending selection calls, however, has come in the form of the one between the posts.

David de Gea and Dean Henderson were of course forced to duke it out for no.1 duties last time out, with a similar scenario having been predicted this season, too.

As outlined above, though, if the latest word stemming from the Manchester United camp is anything to go by, then it appears that Solskjaer’s hand, versus Leeds at least, may well be forced.

Whilst confirmation was forthcoming over the weekend that David de Gea would be linking back up with the Red Devils’ squad today, Dean Henderson, on the other hand, remains unavailable.

In an official statement released this evening, United confirmed that their English shot-stopper will miss the club’s trip to Scotland.

This comes as Henderson continues his attempts to recover from the lasting effects of a bout of Covid-19:

‘He is expected to be training again soon.’

‘Dean Henderson will miss Manchester United’s Scotland training camp while he continues his recovery from prolonged fatigue after contracting a COVID-19 infection three weeks ago.’
