David de Gea speaks out on Manchester United future

David de Gea has spoken out about his Manchester United future.

The Spaniard has been on United’s books for over a decade now, joining the Red Devils from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

De Gea, despite some rough patches, has since cemented himself as United’s undisputed no.1 and would even be named as the Premier League’s Player of the Month for January.

But De Gea is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of next season.

However, when speaking to UEFA recently, the 31-year-old seemed to suggest he was open to extending his stay with Manchester United: "I've been here for many years and, obviously, anything can happen in life, in the world of football, but honestly I don't see myself away from Manchester United."

De Gea on returning to Atletico Madrid

In the same interview, De Gea would be asked about returning to Atletico Madrid with United.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are of course in Champions League action this week and will face Atletico Madrid on Wednesday the 23rd of February.

The tie, which takes place at the Wanda Metropolitano, is the first of two Round of 16 legs, with the reverse fixture on March 15th.

When discussing his return to Atletico this week, De Gea stated: “I like the fact I was born in Madrid, but at the end of the day, it's just a city.

“Now I feel as if I'm from Manchester; I just feel like anyone else from Manchester. Where you are loved and welcomed is your home. I've been here for many years and, obviously, anything can happen in life, in the world of football, but honestly I don't see myself away from Manchester United.

“Of course, I'm going back home [for this tie], I'm going back to the club that gave me the opportunity to be who I am today. But this is just another match. Everyone wants to play well, we want to win, it is a Champions League match. Obviously, I wish Atlético all the best, but I don't know whether the fact we're playing them is a good or bad omen. Everyone is going there to win, especially me.”
