Chelsea vs Brighton betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Chelsea vs Brighton prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Brighton

Chelsea’s indifferent form under Frank Lampard continues.

Last weekend’s defeat to Liverpool saw the Blues drop into the bottom half of the Premier League so they’ll be desperate to climb up a few places here.

Brighton have only ever beaten Chelsea once in 12 meetings and that was in January 1933.

The Seagulls too are not in great form but will they leave Stamford Bridge with a result?

Chelsea vs Brighton & Hove Albion: Who will win?

Chelsea are huge odds on favourites to win this one at 4/9.

Brighton meanwhile are 11/2 to cause a huge shock and win in West London.

A draw is 18/5.

Over 2.5 goals is 8/13.

Both teams to score is 8/11.

Chelsea to win and over 2.5 goals is 10/11.

Chelsea to win and both teams to score is 15/8.

Only one player has scored more Premier League goals than Tammy Abraham this season. He is 14/5 to open the scoring and 19/20 to add to his impressive tally.

Mason Mount is also in very good form. He is 5/1 to score first and 15/8 to net anytime.

Neal Maupay could be Brighton’s biggest threat. The Frenchman is 15/2 to break the deadlock and 14/5 to score anytime.

Both Mount and Abraham to score is 5/1.

Both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Mount to score is 17/2.

Both Pascal Groß and Maupay to score is 30/1.

Both Lewis Dunk and Aaron Mooy to score is 150/1.

It’s fair to say Chelsea’s start to the Premier League season has been mixed.

Last weekend, they were simply outclassed by Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, going down 2-1.

César Azpilicueta had a goal disallowed by VAR early on with Liverpool then doubling their lead just minutes later.

Mid-way through the second half, N’Golo Kanté scored a quite magnificent goal to give them hope but they could not find an equaliser.

That means Chelsea have two wins, two draws and two defeats in the league so far with both of those wins coming away from home.

Their defensive record is currently their biggest concern.

The Blues have conceded 13 goals in their first six games of a top-flight season for the first time since 1978/79.

That year they finished bottom of the First Division.

Although they’re not going to finish bottom this year, they are currently in the bottom half and that is not good enough.

Nevertheless, a win here would see them climb numerous places in the table.

Away from the Premier League, they can boast a very mixed record in cup competitions.

Ten days ago, they were beaten 1-0 at home by Valencia on matchday one of the UEFA Champions League.

Thus, Frank Lampard is the first Chelsea manager to lose his first Champions League match in charge with 10 of the previous 11 winning first time out.

Then, on Wednesday, they hosted Grimsby Town of League Two in the Carabao Cup Third Round.

Ross Barkley, Michy Batshuayi, Pedro, Kurt Zouma, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi all got on the scoresheet in a 7-1 demolition.

That was just the third time Chelsea have scored seven times in a League Cup match but the first since 1960/61 when they did so twice.

Can Chelsea build on that and get their first home win under Lampard in the league?

Can Brighton end their winless run?

As for Brighton, they made a bright start to the season but have not been able to build on it.

In Graham Potter’s first game in charge, they demolished Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road.

That was surprising given the fact Brighton had only won five of their previous 38 Premier League away matches.

However, they have not won since.

Last weekend, they were marginally thee better side but could not find the breakthrough in a goalless draw at St James’ Park.

That takes their tally up to six points after draws with West Ham and Burnley; both of those were at home.

In mid-week, they hosted Aston Villa in the League Cup but crashed out losing 3-1.

In away matches against last season top six, Brighton have lost 11 and drawn the other since promotion in 2017.

Will they finally get a win away at a big side here?

Frank Lampard made eleven changes for the mid-week battering of Grimsby so this side should be fresh.

Kepa Arrizabalaga will return in goal after Willy Caballero made his first appearance of the season on Wednesday.

At centre-back Kurt Zouma and Marc Guehi came in for the League Cup but Andreas Christensen (fitness permitting) and Fikayo Tomori are expected to return here.

Antonio Rüdiger is out with a groin problem.

At left-back, Emerson Palmieri went off injured against Liverpool so Marcos Alonso will keep his place.

On the other side, Chelsea fans will be desperate to see more of Reece James but captain César Azpilicueta is expected to keep his place, for now.

N’Golo Kanté and Jorginho will continue at the base of midfield.

Mateo Kovačić also started against Liverpool but is unlikely to start here too.

That’ll allow Mason Mount to shift inside with Callum Hudson-Odoi making his first Premier League start since April.

He returned with a goal on Wednesday and is expected to stay in the side here.

Up front, Tammy Abraham will come back in.

Although, Michy Batshuayi is now a serious option after scoring his first goal for the club since January 28 2018 on Wednesday.

Will Chelsea make it back to back home wins?

As for Brighton, to say Graham Potter named a young side on Wednesday is an understatement.

With an average age of 22 years and 35 days, Brighton’s starting XI against Aston Villa was the youngest of any Premier League side this season in any competition.

In fact, six of their eleven were born in the 21st century.

30 year old back-up goalkeeper David Button skewed those average age statistics.

He will drop out here with regular goalkeeper Mat Ryan back in.

In defence, last weekend Shane Duffy was surprisingly left out of the side.

However, after Adam Webster helped them keep a clean sheet at Newcastle, there will be no place for Duffy in this XI either.

21 year old Steven Alzate and former Champions League winner Martín Montoya will continue as the wing-backs.

Tudor Băluță made his debut on Wednesday in central-midfield but Dale Stephens and Davy Pröpper will be back in here.

Further forward, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Leandro Trossard and José Izquierdo are all injured.

Thus, Pascal Groß and Aaron Mooy will occupy the more advanced midfield positions.

Highly-rated centre-forward Aaron Connolly led the line on Wednesday but he will join Glenn Murray on the bench with Neal Maupay up top in this one.

Can the Seagulls spring a surprise?
