Chelsea tipped to move for Pep Guardiola in case of Man City exit

The powers that be at Chelsea have been tipped to mount a pursuit of Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola, in the case of the Spaniard becoming available in the near future.

The subject of Guardiola’s future on the Man City bench has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines across the week to date.

This comes on the back of nothing short of groundbreaking developments at the Etihad.

Owing to an investigation spanning a full four years, the reigning champions were charged by the Premier League for over 100 breaches of the division’s financial rules.

Potential punishments facing the Sky Blues, in turn, could range from a points deduction to, remarkably, complete expulsion from English football’s top tier.

Should such an unprecedented sanction come to pass, questions, of course, would immediately be asked of the aforementioned Guardiola’s position at the helm on the blue half of Manchester.

And, as alluded to above, in the case of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich head coach becoming available, one club expected to express an interest in his services comes in the form of Chelsea.

That’s according to reliable Blues journalist Simon Phillips, anyway.

Speaking in an interview with GiveMeSport on Sunday, Phillips was drawn on the chances of Todd Boehly and those in a position of power at Stamford Bridge putting together a move for Guardiola down the line.

And he was not shy in confirming that as much would be a real possibility, in the case of the Spaniard cutting ties with Man City:

“If Pep Guardiola became available, that’s someone I could see the Chelsea owners being like, well, hang on, this is an opportunity we should probably try and get him in whatever the circumstances are.

“Because how many times are you going to get a chance to get a manager like Pep. Obviously, this is me speculating.

“But I think if Pep became available, I could see Chelsea’s heads being turned by that.”
