Boost for Barcelona as Atletico dealt midfield blow ahead of Metropolitano clash

Boost for Barcelona as Atletico dealt midfield blow ahead of Metropolitano clash

Atletico Madrid’s shock defeat to Deportivo Alaves this afternoon proved costly in far more than simply costing the Colchoneros three points.

Laguardia makes the difference

Diego Simeone’s men got their La Liga campaign back underway early on Saturday.

On the back of a solid start to the season, which had seen them pick up 14 points from an available 18, the capital giants made the trip to Mendizorrotza, to take on Alaves.

When all was said and done in the Basque Country, though, a stuttering display ultimately culminated in Atlei being dealt a first defeat of the term.

A solitary goal, netted inside the opening five minutes, proved all that was required to see Alaves over the line.

Victor Laguardia was the hero for the hosts, heading home Ruben Duarte’s whipped corner from the right to secure a first points haul of 2021/22:

Kondogbia blow

For Atletico, on the other hand, the inquest will now get underway.

The Rojiblancos, despite the embarrassment of attacking riches at their disposal, continue to look toothless in the final-third all too often, a shortcoming which Simeone and co. will need to put right if they are to track down city rivals Real Madrid over the weeks and months ahead.

Next up for Atleti, meanwhile, comes up a crunch showdown with Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano next weekend.

The hosts in the Spanish capital, though, will be forced to make do without an important midfield contributor for the Blaugrana clash.

This comes with Geoffrey Kondogbia, despite his side having played out just seven La Liga fixtures, having today picked up his fifth booking of the campaign.

Such a tally culminates in a one-game ban, with the Frenchman, in turn, set to sit out next Saturday night’s action.
