Barcelona woes mount following Atletico defeat as triple injury blow confirmed

Concerning updates on the fitness of a trio of Barcelona stars have been forthcoming on Sunday, on the back of the club’s defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Carrasco makes the difference

Ronald Koeman’s men made the trip to the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday, for their return to action following the international break.

Barca headed into proceedings desperate for a positive result, on the back of an altogether underwhelming opening to the campaign.

Ahead of kick-off in the Spanish capital, the Blaugrana sat in mid-table in La Liga, having managed wins in just 3 of the club’s 7 league outings.

When all was said and done last night, though, the woes of the Catalans only deepened.

Despite boasting the majority of the possession, and creating the better of the chances, the visitors were eventually downed by a goal to nil.

The game’s solitary strike came on the stroke of the interval, when, after Marc-André ter Stegen was caught in no man’s land near the halfway line, Yannick Carrasco did brilliantly to dance past the German, before slotting into an empty net from distance.

Triple blow

As outlined above, though, Barca’s result at the Metropolitano came as far from the only blow dealt to Koeman’s men on Saturday.

Incredibly, as well as seeing their La Liga title hopes take another considerable hit, the Blaugrana were also forced to watch not one, not two, but three key members of the club’s squad pick up potentially long-term injuries.

Gerard Pique’s was of course the most high-profile, with news of the Spanish international’s tears after going to ground in a freak incident with Angel Correa having quickly spread online.

Sergi Roberto, meanwhile, who was also handed a start in Madrid last night, picked up a thigh problem.

And the latest news on both, as confirmed by the Catalans themselves this afternoon, is far from encouraging.

The versatile Roberto is expected to be sidelined for around two months, after rupturing a muscle in his right thigh:

The news on Pique is even worse, with the 33-year-old having suffered both a partial ACL tear, and a serious knee sprain:

Elsewhere, speculation has begun to mount in the Spanish media that Ousmane Dembele, despite seeing out the 90 minutes versus Atletico, also picked up an injury.

The Frenchman fell awkwardly on his shoulder during the clash, with it since claimed that he has picked up some form of sprain.

Though official confirmation has not yet arrived, Dembele could therefore be set for yet another spell on the sidelines over the weeks ahead:
