Messi’s international return ends in defeat
Lionel Messi returned to international duty on Friday with Argentina.
Argentina took on Venezuela in a friendly as they prepare for their Copa America group stage ties, the first of which begins in June.
Messi’s return to the Argentina national side would not be a happy one though.
Newcastle forward Salomon Rondon put Venezuela 1-0 up inside five minutes on Friday.
Jhon Murillo would double Venezuela’s lead just before the end of the first half.
Lautaro Martinez did pull one back for Argentina with Messi providing the assist.
However, a Josef Martinez penalty in the 75th minute ensured Messi’s return ended in a 3-1 defeat.
FC Barcelona provide Lionel Messi injury update
As well as suffering a loss in his first match back, Messi also picked up an injury on Friday.
The Barcelona star did play the full 90 minutes of the friendly.
But Barcelona have since confirmed that Messi suffered an injury during the game, which will keep him out of Argentina’s next game vs Morocco:
“Whilst he would feature from start to finish, a problem with his pubis means that Messi will not play in the second friendly of the international break.”

After the international break, the Catalonian side have several key games including a Champions League tie vs Manchester United.
They also have a huge clash with 2nd place Atletico Madrid in La Liga.
It is not yet know how long Messi will be out for.
