Supporters of Spanish giants FC Barcelona have flooded to social media on Friday, to respond to news of the latest contract renewal in Xavi Hernandez's squad.

The player to have been rewarded with fresh terms? Sergi Roberto.

Versatile defender Roberto is fresh off an altogether disappointing campaign, which saw a series of fitness blows restrict his game-time to just nine La Liga appearances.

Ahead of Xavi's impending 'revolution' at the Camp Nou, media speculation, for some time, had therefore pointed towards the 30-year-old being moved on this summer, upon the expiration of his current contract.

And yet, fresh off suggestions of a change in heart on the part of the respective parties, Roberto's stint in the Catalan capital has been extended once more.

As per an official announcement across the club's social media platforms on Friday:

'FC Barcelona and the player Sergi Roberto have reached an agreement to extend his contract until 30 June 2023. The player's buy out clause will be set at 400 million euros.'

'The worst news'

Safe to say, however, news of Roberto's new deal has not exactly gone down too well with Barca's fanbase.

Taking to the comments section of the club's announcement in their droves, the Blaugrana faithful have made their feelings clear that the decision to keep hold of the Spanish international represents another backwards step:
