Bad news for Neymar after Man United: Real Madrid precedent may lead to significant ban

Neymar after Man United

He may not have played a single minute against Manchester United, however PSG striker Neymar has landed himself in hot water.

Neymar is currently out of action with a broken bone in his foot.

His injury forced the Brazilian to watch PSG lose 3-1 at home to Man United in the Champions League from the sidelines.

Indeed, in the final stages of the game Neymar turned up on the touchline with a worried look on his face.

Man United’s third goal in Paris came from the penalty spot. VAR decided that Presnel Kimpembe had committed a handball offence in the PSG box.

That decision triggered Neymar into a social media rant after the game:

This is a disgrace, they put four people that know nothing about football in charge of looking at the replay for VAR.

There is no penalty. How can it be a handball when it hits his back?! Go f**k yourselves!

On Wednesday UEFA confirmed that they had opened an investigation against Neymar.

Real Madrid precedent indicates banning order

In the Times on Thursday, journalist Paul Hirst considers what might happen to Neymar after UEFA’s investigation.

It’s believed that Neymar could end up missing three Champions League games next season.

Put another way, Neymar would miss the first half of the 2019-20 group phase.

There’s precedent in this matter regarding Gigi Buffon and Real Madrid. The Times recall:

The European governing body banned Gianluigi Buffon, now at PSG, for three matches after he launched a verbal attack on Michael Oliver, the English referee, following Juventus’s Champions League quarter-final defeat by Real Madrid last season.

Uefa is likely to view this case in a similar light and Neymar can therefore expect to receive a similar punishment if found guilty.
