Arsenal fans tear into ‘stupid’ Granit Xhaka after Brighton draw

Supporters of Arsenal have taken to social media in numbers this evening to take aim at midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Arsenal 1-1 Brighton

Unai Emery’s men welcomed Brighton to the Emirates a short time ago, in a crucial outing in the club’s pursuit of a top-4 berth.

The Gunners headed into proceedings on a dismal run of domestic form, having fallen to 4 defeats in their last 5 league outings.

In addition, Chelsea’s victory over Watford earlier today made a 3-point haul an absolute necessity for Arsenal this evening.

However, when all was said and done in North London, the hosts couldn’t get the job done, eventually slumping to a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal did manage to take the lead early on, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang converted from the penalty spot with just 9 minutes on the clock.

Brighton, though, drew level courtesy of a spot-kick of their own on the hour-mark, as Glenn Murray converted after Granit Xhaka had needlessly felled Solly March in the hosts’ box

The final half-hour saw Arsenal huff and puff in their pursuit of an all-important go-ahead goal, but eventually fall short, as the Gunners’ hopes of securing a top-4 berth took a fatal blow.

‘A liability’

As such, it has since come as little surprise to see a number of Arsenal’s stars singled out for heavy criticism online.

The likes of Stephan Lichtsteiner and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have both been targeted, but no player has been more widely-singled out by the North Londoners’ fans than Granit Xhaka.

As outlined above, the Swiss midfielder, in a moment of complete rashness, gave away the all-important penalty that allowed Brighton to level things up, with Xhaka’s all-round performance having also left a lot to be desired:
