According to reports in the Italian media this evening, Sevilla midfielder Steven NZonzi is all set for a move to Serie A outfit AS Roma.
NZonzi’s Sevilla stint
NZonzi, a deep-lying midfielder equally adept either with the ball at his feet or at breaking up the attacks of opposing sides, has established himself has one of the finest midfielders in La Liga over the last couple of seasons, leading to intense links with the likes of Juventus and Arsenal last summer.
However, in the end, no club was willing to meet the 29-year-old’s release clause, despite NZonzi himself having reportedly been keen on a departure.
This past season since proved to be a peculiar one for the former Blackburn and Stoke man, with a major fallout between he and former Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo in November having seen NZonzi dropped from the club’s first-team for 6 weeks.
Despite heavy reports that he had likely played his final game for the club, though, NZonzi managed to work his way back into contention at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, with the powerful midfielder’s performances over the second-half of the season having been absolutely exemplary.
In fact, so impressive was the 29-year-old, that he managed to earn a place in France’s World Cup squad, ahead of the likes of PSG star Adrien Rabiot and more, since going on to add a World Cup winner’s medal to his trophy cabinet.
Arsenal vs Barcelona
Unsurprisingly, NZonzi’s stellar recent form has seen the Les Bleus’ star inevitably linked with a Sevilla departure once again this summer, with Arsenal having been touted as a potential destination once more.
Outlets in Spain over the last couple of weeks even claimed that the midfielder’s father-agent informed Sevilla of his absolute intention to depart the club this summer, with a report from Mundo Deportivo late last month having suggested that Barcelona have now joined the race for NZonzi’s signature.
Roma take the lead
However, a significant update courtesy of Alessandro Austini, highly reliable when it comes to news regarding Serie A club AS Roma, a short time later revealed that the Giallorossi looked set to beat both Arsenal and Barca to the French international, with a 25 million Euro deal having been reported as ‘almost’ complete:
Monchi ha convinto Nzonzi e quasi il Siviglia, costerà intorno ai 25 milioni, ma deve partire Gonalons che ha rifiutato 3 proposte. Continua la caccia all’esterno, ma non essendo tuttora stato scoperto il petrolio a Trigoria inutile sognare Nzonzi più uno carissimo alla Bailey

NZonzi’s Sevilla departure inches closer
And, though Sevilla sporting director Joaquin Caparros since vehemently denied negotiations between the club and Roma, he has also confirmed that NZonzi ‘wants to leave’ the Sanchez Pizjuan before the close of the summer transfer window.
And, as per a significant update this evening, Italian outlet Calciomercato are now claiming that Roma are in fact on the verge of securing the Frenchman’s signature.
The Giallorossi are said to have convinced Sevilla to lower their demands from 35 million Euro to a fee of between 28 and 30 million Euro, with NZonzi himself having reportedly agreed to the terms of a 4-year-contract worth 3 million Euro-per-season at the Stadio Olimpico.
