WNBA: Fever’s Caitlin Clark Expected To Return From Injury On Wednesday

Indiana Fever superstar guard Caitlin Clark said that she expects to return to action tomorrow against the Golden State Valkyries after missing Indy’s last five matchups with a groin injury. Clark made the announcement earlier today after participating in a five-on-five practice, her first since suffering the injury on June 24th.

“I think it’s just nice to get back out there and get the flow of playing with my teammates again,” she told reporters. “It’s going to be fun to get back out there, hopefully, and just feel things again. I don’t know what the type of minutes I’m going to get will look like, but just when I’m out there, compete, play hard. This is going to be a team that’s going to be moving constantly. So just being aware and active. Bring energy. That’s obviously hard, sitting out and watching for a few weeks, so I’m definitely excited to get back out there.”

Fever head coach Stephanie White said that today’s practice was critical ahead of Indiana’s three-game homestand. Clark’s participation will also make it easier to reintegrate her into the team’s game plan.

“The biggest thing for us: prep for Golden State, certainly,” White said. “Then, continuing to build. Reintegrate (Clark) into some of our actions offensively and defensively. Again, continuing to get [the] first two days of looks with her and Aari (McDonald) on the floor at the same time. What that looks like. What actions we like. And then reintegrating her into what we need to do on the defensive end.”

Obviously, it’s less than ideal when you lose a two-time All-Star for any period of time. Yet, the Fever were able to stay afloat, going 3-2 in Clark’s absence.

“First and foremost, our defensive energy and effort had been really good. Our mobility, our activity level, our ability to execute schemes, for the most part, had been really good,” White explained. “We’ve had defensive versatility. And I love, offensively, how the ball’s moving. How multiple players are getting touches. We’re moving it side to side. We’re getting high percentage looks. And that’s part of just conversations as C gets back on the floor… But I thought, particularly on the defensive end, prior to her initial injury, she was good on the defensive end. She was really solid for us on the defensive end. We need that from her.”

At the moment, it’s unclear how much Clark will play in her first game back from injury, but she said that she would like to play for at least 20 minutes.

“I hope to play a decent amount – in the upper 20s,” Clark stated. “I guess it depends on how the game goes and how I feel, and what the team needs. But I feel pretty good. But, I’m going to try to not overdo it and put myself in a good position moving forward.”

“Reintegrating C, getting (Damiris Dantas) back, now we have a couple more players, so our rotation’s a little bit deeper,” White said. “So for us as a staff, we might not have to go longer periods of time with the same rotation. Get them in and out a little bit quicker [and] try to stay fresh, or as fresh as possible.”

The Fever will be at home tomorrow against the Valkyries. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. EDT.
