WNBA: Caitlin Clark Not Expected To Participate In All-Star Game Or Three-Point Contest

Indiana Fever superstar guard Caitlin Clark is not expected to participate in the league’s Three-Point Contest or the WNBA All-Star Game scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. This comes after Clark suffered a groin injury on Tuesday, during the Fever’s 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun.

“I am incredibly sad and disappointed to say I can’t participate in the Three-Point Contest or the All-Star Game. I have to rest my body,” Clark wrote in a statement released by the Fever earlier today. “I will still be at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for all the action, and I’m looking forward to helping Sandy (Brondello) coach our team to a win.”

Clark had previously been named an All-Star and a captain for the game alongside the Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier. This would have been her second All-Star Game appearance in her two-year WNBA career.

“The mood of the team is okay,” said Fever guard Aari McDonald following the team’s Wednesday night loss to the New York Liberty. “We were talking before the game, and we were just like, ‘We’re all we got, so we have to stick together.’ Things are going to happen like that, and like coach said, we faced a lot of adversity. We’re either going to grow through it, or we’re going to be better. I think, obviously, we want to grow through it. We’ve just got to come in, reset, and just be locked in, and just ready to play.”

The good news is that the Fever have gotten used to playing without Caitlin Clark this season. She has only appeared in 13 of the team’s 23 games up to this point.

“You know, we’d love to have her,” Sophie Cunningham told reporters after last night’s game. “I think we all know that when she’s playing, it’s a whole different team, and then when she’s not playing, we’re a whole other squad. So it’s adjusting, but I think that we’ve seen both sides and we’re confident in both sides… We’re pros. That’s part of being a pro.”

Clark was named the ESPYS WNBA Player of the Year less than a day after she was injured. This marks her fourth time winning an ESPYS award.

“Obviously, she continues to get new awards. She continues to break barriers. She continues to do things that we haven’t seen before,” said Fever head coach Stephanie White last night. “To be able to be honored, whether it’s the ESPYS or whether it’s league awards or whether it’s All-Star or whatever, I just think they can continue to then lead the way for the other young players that are watching. We’re proud of Caitlin. It is a big thing, and we’re going to continue to support her.”

According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert will select a replacement for Clark to participate in the All-Star Game on Saturday. She previously announced that the Lynx’s Kayla McBride would replace the Atlanta Dream’s Rhyne Howard, who is dealing with a knee injury.

“I’m so excited for Indy to host WNBA All-Star this weekend,” wrote Caitlin Clark. “I want to thank the Indianapolis Host Committee and all of the people that have put endless work in over the past year to put this event together. I know this will be the best All-Star yet.”

WNBA All-Star Weekend kicks off tomorrow night with the WNBA Starry Three-Point Contest and the Kia WNBA Skills Challenge. The first event will begin at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
