What a difference a fortnight makes. Inter Miami went into the international break on a five-game winless run in MLS. They come into Saturday night’s trip to Mercedes-Benz Stadium with two straight wins, two clean sheets, and having clinched their place in the end-of-season play-offs.
Lionel Messi’s first game back after his Argentina farewell was a comfortable one. Miami thrashed DC United 4-0 at Nu Stadium last Saturday, and they followed it up with a 2-0 win over New York City FC in midweek. Messi set up Rodrigo De Paul for the second goal after Germán Berterame had opened the scoring.
Messi has now been involved in at least one goal in every game he has played since the Leagues Cup, and he has 23 MLS goals this season. Luis Suárez has added 15 of his own.
Kily González’s side sit second in the Eastern Conference, and they have been at their best on the road. Miami’s eight away wins is the most in MLS, and one more would beat their total of regular-season road wins from last season. They also lead the league in big chances created (110) and set-piece goals (16).
Atlanta are in a very different situation. Gerardo Martino’s side are 14th in the East and six points below the playoff line with five games left, and they have five teams to overtake if they are to avoid missing the post-season for a second straight year.
They did at least give themselves a lift in midweek, winning 3-0 at CF Montréal with goals from Miguel Almirón, Giuliano Galoppo and Breel Embolo. Home form is the big problem, though. Atlanta have taken just one point from their last four games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and they have the fifth-lowest expected goals total in MLS this season.
History is mixed. Atlanta have taken points in six of their last seven home meetings with Miami in all competitions, but they haven’t beaten them at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the regular season since a 5-2 win in 2023. Miami won this fixture 2-1 last year and are unbeaten in their last three MLS meetings with Atlanta.
