This is an enormous tie for both of these clubs so who will win this crucial first leg?

For Arsenal, it’s UEFA Europa League or bust.

Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Everton at the Emirates saw them drop down to tenth in the Premier League so a top seven finish is going to be out of their reach.

As a result, the Gunners’ passage to the semi-finals of this competition has been far from straight forward.

Only an 87th minute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang header saw them beat Benfica in the round of 32 before the scrapped past Olympiacos 3-2 on aggregate in the last 16.

In the quarter-finals, Slavia Praha left London with a first leg 1-1 draw before Mikel Arteta’s side turned on the style in the Czech capital.

Alexandre Lacazette scored a brace with Nicolas Pépé and Bukayo Saka also netting in a 4-0 hammering.

Arsenal’s best European results have come away from home in 2021 and they’ll need another in Eastern Spain.

Villarreal though are led by a serial UEFA Europa League winner that Arsenal know all about.

Unai Emery won this trophy with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016 before leading Arsenal to the 2019 final in Bakı.

No manager has won this competition on more occasions.

Also, Villarreal’s European form has been electric this season.

They’ve won 11 of their 12 matches, including all six in the knockout phase, eliminating RB Salzburg, Dynamo Kyiv and, most recently, GNK Dinamo Zagreb.

Strikers Paco Alcácer and Gerard Moreno have both scored six times in the competition so far.

Like their opponents though, Villarreal are hoping the Europa League can salvage their season.

El Submarino Amarillo come into this one having lost their last two games, both 2-1, to Alavés a week ago and to Barcelona on Sunday.

They’re currently seventh in La Liga which would only see them qualify for the Europa Conference League play-off round

Thus, like Arsenal, they’re desperate to claim silverware and a golden Champions League ticket.

Who will win at Estadio de la Cerámica?

Prediction: Villarreal 1-1 Arsenal

Arsenal have won both of their previous ties against Villarreal, in the Champions League semi-finals in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2009.

Villarreal have previously appeared in four major European semi-finals, losing all of them to Valencia, Arsenal, Porto and Liverpool.
