Spanish Grand Prix Recap
Oscar Piastri further strengthened his championship lead with a commanding victory in the Spanish Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, the Australian went on to achieve his fifth F1 victory of the season.
Lance Stroll, who was racing in the race before his home Grand Prix, was ruled out with a wrist injury late on Saturday evening, with no time left to arrange a replacement. This meant Aston Martin only had one car running in the race, Fernando Alonso.
Piastri made an excellent start to the race, but teammate Lando Norris lost out to Max Verstappen in turn 1. Norris went on to take the position back, but Verstappen and Red Bull leapfrogged both McLarens to take the lead.
However, this was brief, and Verstappen made an early second pit stop, which caused many questions around the paddock about whether Red Bull had pitted him too early. After deciding to make a third pit stop, the race certainly became eventful as a safety car was deployed following Kimi Antontelli having to stop his car with a mechanical issue.
Most of the front of the grid made a cheap stop, with Piastri and Norris pulling clear at the restart with a six-lap dash to the chequered flag. Verstappen, however, found himself passed by Charles Leclerc, followed by a battle with George Russell where the pair made contact.
A second collision between the drivers, a purposeful one from the Dutchman, saw home receive a 10-second time penalty to finish 10th.
Winners so far this season:
- Australian GP – Lando Norris
- Chinese GP – Oscar Piastri
- Japanese GP – Max Verstappen
- Bahrain GP – Oscar Piastri
- Saudi Arabia GP – Oscar Piastri
- Miami GP – Oscar Piastri
- Emilia Romagna GP – Max Verstappen
- Monaco GP – Lando Norris
- Spanish GP – Oscar Piastri
Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying Preview
Last time out in Barcelona, Piastri beat his teammate to pole position by the biggest winning margin of the season so far, 0.209s. The Australian driver will be keen to do this again, and possibly by an even bigger margin out in Montreal.
Ferrari will be looking to improve on their qualifying performances of late, following slightly disappointing fifth and seventh-place starts last time out.
Verstappen will be looking to split the two front-runners after starting behind them in P3 in Spain.
Mercedes will be hopeful of another strong qualifying performance that saw their drivers occupy fourth and sixth on the grid in Barcelona.
