Sheffield United sack Ruben Selles after losing first six games of the season with Chris Wilder set for shock return to Championship’s bottom side

Sheffield United have sacked head coach Ruben Selles after losing their first six games of the season, with Chris Wilder strongly linked with a return.

The Blades are currently bottom of the Championship with zero points and lost 5-0 away at Ipswich on Friday in Selles’ final game in charge.

Selles, who has previously managed Hull and Reading, was appointed in the summer to replace Wilder, with the former boss now poised for his third spell at Bramall Lane, according to The Telegraph.

Wilder led the Yorkshire side to within touching distance of the Premier League last season, losing in stoppage time to Sunderland in the play-off final after guiding them to third in the table.

Since Selles’ appointment, United have lost all five of their Championship games, including a 4-1 defeat on the opening day at home to Bristol City, and were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the second round by Birmingham.

Sheffield United said Selles had been relieved of his duties after a “disappointing” start to the season.

“Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position,” the club said.

Wilder set for third Sheffield United spell

Multiple sources say the Blades are poised to turn once again to Wilder, just 88 days after his controversial dismissal.

Wilder has managed the club on two previous occasions between 2016-2021 and 2023-2025, guiding to the top flight in his first spell before being appointed to help the club avoid relegation during the 2023-24 season.

Despite their relegation, he guided the club into the play-offs the following season, amassing 90 points as they narrowly missed out on another promotion.
