There were narrow wins for both Brentford and Brighton but defeat for Fulham as the fight for a potential Conference League place intensifies.

Should Manchester City lift the FA Cup next weekend, it will mean an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League will be the ticket to European football next season.

The Bees and the Seagulls boosted their Conference League chances with wins over Ipswich and Wolves, respectively.

Kevin Schade grabbed the only goal at Portman Road as Thomas Frank’s side ran out 1-0 winners over the Tractor Boys, while a Danny Welbeck penalty and Brajan Gruda strike proved to be enough in a 2-0 victory at Molineux.

There was disappointment for Fulham, however, as Marco Silva’s team were beaten 3-1 by Everton at Craven Cottage to leave them trailing Brentford and Brighton by four points with two games remaining.

Raul Jimenez opened the scoring for the hosts but a Vitalii Mykolenko on the stroke of half-time levelled things up.

After the break, the Toffees netted twice in quick succession when, first, Michal Keane gave David Moyes’ team the lead in the 70th minute before Beto added a third three minutes later to compound a miserable afternoon for the Cottagers.

The race for a Champions League spot took an intriguing turn at St Mary’s, where already-relegated Southampton held third-placed Manchester City to a goalless stalemate.

The result opens the door for either Newcastle or Chelsea to leapfrog Pep Guardiola’s side when the two teams meet on Sunday, while Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have also been given the chance to make ground on last season’s league champions with victories this weekend.

Southampton’s point also means they have avoided the unfortunate accolade of the joint-worst points tally in the history of the Premier League.

The Saints now have 12 points, one better than Derby County’s total in 2011.
