Arsenal’s winning machine suffered a rare malfunction as Mikel Arteta’s defending champions were thrashed 3-0 by in-form Brighton this afternoon.
The Gunners went into the contest having registered six victories from six games in all competitions to start the season but were a distant second best on the South Coast as Brighton completed a brilliant week with another superb display.
Pascal Gross was again at the heart of the Seagulls’ best moments, opening the scoring with a shot that eluded David Raya at his near post after 31minutes.
It was 2-0 on the stroke of half-time with Charalampos Kostoulas firing in from 25 yards after a swift counter-attack from the hosts.
Arsenal continued to look all at sea and it was no surprise when Chema Andrés marked his first Premier League start with a third, heading in Gross’ cross.
The defeat saw Arsenal slip to second behind Manchester City, who play Sunderland tomorrow.
Arsenal’s neighbours Tottenham also lose
It was a miserable afternoon for the North London clubs with Tottenham also losing, 3-2 at home to Aston Villa.
Johan Manzambi prodded in just before the break to give Villa, for whom it was a first win, the lead.
Spurs thought they had equalised in the second half but Mohammed Kudus’s effort was disallowed for offside against Andy Robertson.
It was cruel but Villa showed no mercy with Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia scoring to increase the visitors’ advantage.
Conor Gallagher did net Tottenham’s first league goal of the season with four minutes to go, and there was still time for Jan Paul van Hecke to add a second, but it was scant consolation.
Promoted teams Hull and Ipswich both beaten
Hull’s unbeaten start is over after they failed to come back from a nightmare opening seven minutes at Newcastle.
The hosts, who were thrashed at Leeds on Monday night, bounced back with early goals from Joe Willock and Lewis Hall putting them in command.
They could have had a third but Yoane Wissa saw his spot-kick saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis on the stroke of half-time after Jacob Murphy went down easily under the challenge of Sorba Thomas.
Mohamed-Ali Cho’s neat finish brought Hull back into the game but, despite plenty of late pressure, the Tigers could not find an equaliser.
Everton moved up to fifth with a hard-fought 1-0 win over 10-man Ipswich at the Hill Dickinson.
Thierno Barry’s 11th-minute goal put the Toffees ahead and their position was strengthened when Abdul Fatawu was sent off midway through the second half for a second yellow card after going down theatrically under minimal contact from James Garner.
The Tractor Boys still carried plenty of threat going forward and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had to make fine saves to deny Emersonn, Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara.
