Everton forward Neal Maupay has hit back at fans who waited at London Euston train station to shout abuse at the players as they departed for Merseyside following a 4-0 loss to Tottenham last weekend.

A video surfaced online showing a number of angry supporters swearing and abusing Maupay and his team-mates as they walked past, with the former Brentford man retaliating with some choice language of his own.

Everton’s start to the new Premier League campaign has been troubling.

They lost 3-0 at home to Brighton on the opening weekend before being smashed on the road to Spurs, leaving them bottom of the table with a -7 goal difference.

Maupay took to social media to defend Everton, posting “Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this.

“Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best.”

Maupay has been involved in plenty of online spats with fans and players in the past.

He had a few particularly fruity moments with James Maddison, copying his darts celebration in a defeat last season before posting a picture of himself in front of a darts board when the midfielder missed out on the England squad for Euro 2024.

But the Everton Fans’ Forum have jumped to the defence of the players, adding: “We echo those condemning the scenes at Euston Station on Saturday.

“The behaviour was conducted by a very small minority and put Evertonians in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

“We will continue to support the fans, some of whom form part of the forum, in working to raise a positive pre-match atmosphere in the stands with the overall aim of best assisting the players on the pitch.”

Everton face Doncaster in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, where a win will be a much-needed confidence booster for everyone associated with the club.
