Marc Guehi’s move to Liverpool collapses at final moment

Marc Guehi will be staying put at Crystal Palace this season.

The Eagles captain looked set to link up with Liverpool and had even completed a medical for the club, but it fell through at the last minute.

Palace were close to landing Fiorentina’s Igor Julio before he opted for West Ham.

They did secure 19-year-old Toulouse centre-back Jaydee Canvot on a four-year deal, but wanted two signings finalised before allowing their captain to depart.

The failed move capped a busy day for Liverpool, who also agreed a British-record £125m deal with Newcastle United for striker Alexander Isak.

Guehi was a key target for Liverpool after Jarrell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen, with concerns persisting over defensive lapses that saw Arne Slot’s side concede six goals in their opening three fixtures.

Instead, he will continue at Selhurst Park at lead the Eagles on their first-ever quest in Europe.

His current contract expires next summer, meaning he could leave for free if he chooses.
