Liverpool have been left stunned at Anfield and find themselves trailing at half-time to Southampton.

William Smallbone was the man who grabbed the goal, and wheeled off with a huge grin on his face.

And the crowd inside the stadium could not believe what was happening either.

Ryan Manning’s quick throw put Smallbone in pursuit of the ball inside Liverpool’s 18-yard box, but Virgil Van Dijk eased ahead of the midfielder and looked to allow Alisson to claim it.

A miscommunication between the goalkeeper and his captain brought the Southampton player to get back into the action, claiming the loose ball before tucking a right-footed finish into the empty goal from eight yards away.

The Reds now face an uphill battle to get themselves back into the tie and turn things around as they look to move 16 points clear at the top.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will be licking their lips at the possible opportunity to peg things back when they travel to Manchester United tomorrow.
