Aston Villa headed to Manchester United knowing they needed a win to stand any realistic chance of playing in the Champions League next season.
Villa started the day in sixth, level on points with Chelsea and Newcastle above them.
For United, the season could not end quickly enough.
Their remaining chance of salvaging silverware disappeared on Wednesday when another abject display saw them lose 1-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao.
