Glasner backs Mitchell for England call-up ahead of 2026 World Cup

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner believes Tyrick Mitchell could force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for next summer’s World Cup in North America after an outstanding performance in the 2-1 win over Fulham.

Mitchell was one of Palace’s key figures at Craven Cottage, driving forward from the left flank as the visitors snatched a late victory that lifted them into fourth place in the Premier League.

With Daniel Munoz unavailable on the opposite side, the 26-year-old assumed extra attacking responsibility, repeatedly stretching Fulham’s defence and delivering dangerous deliveries into the box.

Although Mitchell made two England appearances under Gareth Southgate back in 2016, he has rarely been involved at international level since.

Glasner, however, suggested the defender’s recent level could put him firmly back in contention.

“I was very impressed with T,” said Glasner. “I told him after the game that I’m pretty sure if he continues playing like this, he will be in consideration for the World Cup with England because he’s doing so well.

“Not just defensively. He’s such a great defender, but the balls today in behind [were great].

“He takes better decisions. When he passed into the middle and Clyney had the chance in the first half at the far post, he could see there was no space in behind and played a cutback.

“He had two or three great crosses in behind in the second half because the space was there. Sometimes it’s in behind and sometimes it’s in the cutback. You have to take the decision.

“The job of the players inside is to be there and they were, now T’s finding them more and more. He’s really playing on a very high level right now.”
