Frank hails Spence after England call-up and hints at imminent Simons signing
Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has heaped praise on defender Djed Spence after he was called up to the England squad for the first time.
The full-back has been in sensational form for Spurs, filling in at left-back for Destiny Udogie during his injury absence.
During that time, he has arguably nailed down his spot as a starter, helping Spurs keep a clean sheet in their opening two games of the season.
As a result, Thomas Tuchel has included him in the Three Lions squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Speaking on the moment, Frank said in his pre-match press conference: “We have a new English national team player in Djed Spence.
“Wow, how good is that? He truly deserves it. It’s been a great journey, just turning 25 this year, to be called up – I don’t think many saw that coming.
“He had a top pre-season, played well in the last three games, I’m so happy for him.”
Spence has been sent out on various loan spells since joining the club from Nottingham Forest, and Serie A side Genoa even had an option to buy the defender for just £6million a few seasons ago.
But he will have to continue working hard to keep his form up, with Frank also confirming Destiny Udogie will return to the squad for the Bournemouth clash this weekend.
Simons to Spurs
In another dose of good news, Frank all but confirmed the imminent arrival of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.
The attacking midfielder looked set to join Chelsea before the end of the window, but will now link up with their North London neighbours for a fee of around £51.8million.
Frank added: “I hope they get good news later today for various reasons because we’re trying to sign players and that we will try to do until the end of the transfer window.
“I can confirm that we are working very hard to get someone over the line, that I can confirm.”
