Chelsea 0-3 Manchester City: Report, result and goals as Arsenal’s lead is cut to six points

Manchester City cut Arsenal’s lead in the Premier League title race to six points as three second-half goals steered them to an emphatic 3-0 win at Chelsea.

City were handed a huge opportunity to tilt the title race in their favour as Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

And Pep Guardiola’s men made no mistake in taking that chance, sealing a victory that leaves them in an excellent position to overhaul the Gunners at the top of the table.

Arsenal still hold the advantage and a slightly superior goal difference but, with a game in hand and a potentially decisive home fixture against Mikel Arteta’s men at the Etihad Stadium next Sunday, it is Pep Guardiola’s men who will now be the favourites in the eyes of many.

City struggled to break down Chelsea in an even first half, but Nico O’Reilly’s 51st-minute header from Rayan Cherki’s cross opened the floodgates.

Manchester City celebrate at Chelsea

Marc Guehi doubled the lead six minutes later with the brilliant Cherki to the fore again, before Jeremy Doku compounded Chelsea’s misery and further frayed the nerves in North London by slotting home after dispossessing Moises Caicedo.

A third straight league defeat for Chelsea will likely to lead to further questions about head coach Liam Rosenior and increased scrutiny on the club’s ownership, with Champions League football next season looking increasingly unlikely. City will be playing in that competition in 2026-27, and belief they will do so as the champions of England is rapidly on the rise.

Manchester City pile the pressure on Arsenal

Chelsea appeared to have broken the deadlock in the 15th minute when Marc Cucurella swept home after a well-worked attack, only for the Spaniard to be denied by the offside flag.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was forced to parry from Cole Palmer as Chelsea produced a first-half showing that suggested they could provide assistance to their neighbours, but City finished the opening period the stronger, with Bernardo Silva’s first-half effort kept out by Robert Sanchez after good work from O’Reilly.

Cherki flashed an effort just wide of the far post early in the second half, but it was his abilities as a creator that turned the game firmly in City’s favour.

The France international’s delivery from the right was perfect as O’Reilly repeated the trick from the EFL Cup final win over Arsenal, which he settled with a pair of headers, by powering beyond Sanchez at the far post.

Cherki outdid himself with the second assist, slipping a superb ball into Guehi after surging in from the left following a short corner routine. Centre-back Guehi turned and slotted home with the composure of a seasoned striker, and the game was over as a contest.

There was a blemish for City as O’Reilly was forced off through injury, but gloss to the scoreline came as Doku hustled Caicedo off the ball and tucked into the bottom-left corner, allowing City’s fans to spend the remainder of the match goading Arsenal over a prospective collapse in a compelling title race.

Cucurella was denied at point-blank range by Donnarumma as the game was bookended by Chelsea frustration. It was a familiar tale for a Blues side that stay four points behind Liverpool in the race for the top five. After this result, the odds are shortening that the season will end with the familiar sight of City lifting the Premier League trophy.
