Arteta says Arsenal exploring ‘every option’ in January transfer window
Arsenal are considering bolstering their squad in January
Mikel Arteta says he is “open to every option” in the January transfer window despite Arsenal reaching the midway point of the Premier League season with a four-point lead at the top of the table.
The Gunners invested heavily over the summer, adding the likes of Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi to an already strong squad.
But a raft of injuries mean they are now considering going back into the market as they look to secure their first league title since 2003.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Bournemouth, Arteta said: “We are open to every option. Obviously if we can find a solution that is short, medium or long [term] it is always much better because it gives you stability and you don’t have to constantly start a process with new players. But let’s see what happens, let’s see what the news is over the next few weeks and hopefully we can try to make the right decision.”
There has been speculation teenage winger Ethan Nwaneri could be sent on loan after featuring just once in the past 10 games. But Arteta indicated he needs everyone at his disposal at the minute.
He added: “Every player is important, every player has a role, which can change throughout the season for different reasons, so everybody has to be ready to play.”
Defensive duo absent and Declan Rice a major doubt
Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Riccardo Calafiori will miss the trip to the Vitality Stadium due to injury while England midfielder Declan Rice is also a major doubt.
Rice sat out the 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Tuesday with a knee problem and, asked if the swelling in the joint had subsided, Arteta said: “Not yet. We have another session today. Let’s see how he comes through today and how he’s feeling, but it was too early that game for him.”
Germany forward Kai Havertz returned from a serious knee injury as an unused substitute against Villa and he can now compete for a starting spot with other striking options Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus.
“It helps the team, it helps every individual [to have to fight for their place]. I think that’s what we want, to have the options, with the manner of the games we have and the schedule,” added the Arsenal boss.
“So far we haven’t had the options, so looking forward to having everybody on it, everybody performing and being able to change profiles and to change them during the game as well, to pick the best players in the best condition every time.”
