A late goal from Jacob Ramsey saw Newcastle fight back from 2-0 down and avoid a first Premier League defeat for Matthias Jaissle.
With Alex Scott showing the type of display that led to him being linked with big moves away from the Cherries all summer, the visitors raced into a two-goal lead with some vibrant pressing and attacking football.
But to their credit, Newcastle dug in and after Harvey Barnes curled home superbly, Ramsey powered in from the edge of the area with two minutes left.
The visitors went ahead when Rayan made a run and cross down the left. When Scott’s shot on the edge of the box was blocked, the ball span kindly into the path of Marcus Tavernier to bury from close range.
Justin Kluivert had a shot well charged down as Scott ran the show.
Another rapid attack came from Scott winning the ball back. Kluivert hit the post with a stunning long range strike and when Scott retrieved the ball to fire it across goal it struck Malick Thiaw and looped in for an unfortunate own goal.
The home crowd were incensed but Barnes then instantly reduced the deficit with a cracking curling shot after cutting in from the left.
The hosts almost made it 2-2 at the start of the second half when a great run from Yoanne Wissa led to Joe Willock drifting a header wide from close range.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo came on, the second Belgian to feature for Newcastle in the Premier League after Philippe Albert, and looked lively.
But it was another substitute in Ramsey who rifled in at the Gallowgate End and earn a point.
