Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of midfielder Franco Mastantuono.

The 17-year-old will join Madrid from River Plate on August 14 and has agreed a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid will pay the teenager’s release clause that stands at £38.5million having beaten off competition from Paris Saint-Germain.

Mastantuono will play for River at the Club World Cup before flying to Madrid where he will be incorporated straight into the first-team squad.

Already an Argentina international

He made his Argentina debut earlier this month, coming off the bench in the 1-0 win against Chile and is seen as the long-term successor to Luka Modric, who will end his long association with Madrid after this summer’s competition in the United States.

Mastantuono scored four goals and added four assists in 12 appearances for River in the first phase of the Argentine top flight and fits perfectly into new coach Xabi Alonso’s vision of a more athletic Madrid midfield.

Madrid have also received assurances over his character ahead of his big move to Europe.

He becomes Madrid’s third summer signing following the captures of Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth and Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool.
