Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election as FIFA president in March 2027, despite growing opposition to his leadership from European football.
Infantino has held the position since 2016 and had been expected to secure another term without a serious challenge.
However, his position has come under greater scrutiny following his controversial plan to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms.
The proposal was eventually scrapped after sparking widespread criticism, with UEFA even threatening to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup.
FIFA has now confirmed that Infantino intends to seek another term, which would keep him in charge of world football until 2031 if he is successful.
“The Fifa president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,” a Fifa statement said.
“Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”
Infantino refused to answer questions about his future when approached by reporters at the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland on Saturday.
