Cristiano Ronaldo suspended by Portugal after Jorge Jesus fallout as federation opens investigation

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after disciplinary proceedings were opened following his controversial departure from the national team.

The 41-year-old left Portugal’s squad during the recent international break after a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time.

Ronaldo subsequently apologised to his team-mates and supporters, admitting he had been wrong to leave the camp and insisting he would accept any punishment imposed by the federation.

However, the FPF has now confirmed that an investigation is underway, with the Portugal captain facing an uncertain international future while the disciplinary process continues.

“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on October 9, 2026,” the federation said in a statement.

The governing body explained that Ronaldo had initially been placed under an automatic provisional suspension before a further suspension was imposed.

The case has also been classified as “urgent”, although no timeframe has been provided for a final ruling.

Ronaldo scores 980th career goal on Al-Nassr return

While his international future remains uncertain, Ronaldo has already returned to action for Al-Nassr.

The Portuguese forward scored on Friday as Postecoglou’s side secured a 3-0 victory over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo opened the scoring after Kingsley Coman’s effort from outside the penalty area was saved by goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah.

The 41-year-old reacted quickest to the rebound and finished from close range to register the 980th goal of his professional career.

The victory moved defending champions Al-Nassr level on points with league leaders Al-Qadsiah after eight rounds of fixtures, although they remain behind on goal difference.

Postecoglou had previously insisted Ronaldo was in good spirits following his return from international duty and declined to comment on the disagreement with Jesus.

“Ronaldo played for us with full commitment and his morale is very high,” the Australian said earlier this week.

“I’m his coach now at Al Nassr, and he is a great addition to our team.

“I don’t like to talk about what happened with his national team.”
