Why me? Kvaratskhelia posts emotional message after ACL blow that will sideline PSG star for rest of the season

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has vowed to come back stronger after sustaining a ruptured ACL and claimed he was chosen by God to help protect other players from injury.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger sustained the setback last night during the 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona at the Parc des Princes, falling awkwardly after challenging Xavi Espart.

He will undergo an operation in the coming days and won’t play again this season.

It is a crushing blow for the 25-year-old and for PSG, who will now go in search of a third successive Champions League success without the brilliant Georgian.

Kvaratskhelia wrote on social media: “Why me? I was not ready for this.

“Many people have asked me questions about this setback, many have said that if all the footballers in the world prayed, the match would end in a draw. That might be true, but before every match I play, I ask God to leave the field unscathed, but in vain.

“It hasn’t been long, but it’s still in my head – why me? I’ve never missed anything, probably prepared for this game the best I’ve ever prepared. I thought I was prepared for everything, but no. I realise that God has chosen me and if I was protecting the players on another field, I’m ready to go through these months of work, pain, tears.

“I know I have to come back stronger for my people who always support me, I won’t let you down, I promise I won’t waste a second. Thank you all for your support, see you soon.”

Kvaratskhelia one of three injury blows for PSG

There was early concern when Kvaratskhelia was helped off just short of the hour mark last night and PSG’s worst fears were confirmed this morning following tests.

A PSG medical update read: “Victim of a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee during yesterday’s match against FC Barcelona, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery in the coming days.”

The medical update also revealed both Ousmane Dembele and captain Marquinhos sustained thigh injuries that will keep them out for several weeks.

Speaking after the game, PSG boss Luis Enrique admitted his frustration at the prospect of having to do without three key players at an important stage of the season.

“I am not the doctor. I am the coach,” he said. “The three injuries is the worst part of the game today. We will have to wait for the tests tomorrow. They are three very important players, so it’s really bad news, of course, but that’s football.”

It is the loss of Kvaratskhelia that will hurt the Parisians most, though.

The supremely gifted playmaker, nicknamed ‘Kvaradona’ by fans of former club Napoli in homage to the great Diego Maradona, is a major part of PSG’s attacking arsenal.

He has scored 29 goals in 91 games for PSG in all competitions.
