WATCH: Barcelona down to 10 men as Alvarez scores sensational goal
Former City man scores superb free-kick
Barcelona were a goal and a man down before half-time of their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid as Julian Alvarez scored a brilliant goal.
The home side had been largely on top but saw defender Pau Cubarsi dismissed in the 44th minute for tripping Giuliano Simeone.
Referee Istvan Kovacs initially booked the centre-back but was called to his monitor and decided a straight red card was the right call.
And Barca were given a double blow when former Manchester City man Alvarez stepped up to bend in a quite brilliant goal from the resulting free-kick.
Marcus Rashford had earlier had the ball in the net but was flagged offside, while Lamine Yamal looked lively throughout.
Hansi Flick’s side will need to reshuffle after the break.
Atlético Madrid have caused Barcelona immense pain in Europe, famously eliminating them at this stage in 2014 and 2016.
