Catch up with all the action from PSG vs Liverpool in the Champions League
Paris Saint-Germain took control of their Champions League quarter-final with a comfortable 2-0 win over Liverpool at the Parc des Princes, with goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia underlining a dominant display in front of the home crowd.
Luis Enrique’s side set the tone early on, controlling possession and pinning Liverpool deep inside their own half.
The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute, albeit in fortunate circumstances. Doue’s effort from the edge of the area took a significant deflection, looping beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili to hand PSG the lead.
Liverpool struggled to respond. Deploying a more cautious system, they failed to register a single shot in the first half and rarely threatened Gianluigi Safonov’s goal.
PSG, meanwhile, created the clearer openings, with Doue denied one-on-one and Kvaratskhelia forcing a smart save from his international team-mate Mamardashvili.
No second-half response for Liverpool
The visitors showed brief signs of life after the break, but their momentum never materialised into sustained pressure.
Instead, PSG continued to look the more coherent attacking force, with Ousmane Dembele and Achraf Hakimi stretching Liverpool’s defensive structure.
The second goal came in the 65th minute and showcased PSG at their fluid best. A sweeping move involving 27 passes ended with Jo=o Neves threading a perfectly weighted pass into Kvaratskhelia.
The Georgian winger glided past multiple challenges before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing into an empty net to double the advantage.
Liverpool’s night was further defined by frustration in front of goal. Despite late substitutions, including the introduction of Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, they failed to register a shot on target.
Their best moments came from set-pieces and long throws, but PSG dealt with them comfortably.
There was late controversy when Nuno Mendes appeared to be pushed in the area by Ibrahima Konate, but the referee waved away appeals and VAR did not intervene.
Earlier, a penalty initially awarded to PSG for a challenge on Warren Zaire-Emery was overturned following review.
PSG could have extended their lead further, with Dembele striking the post and Hakimi spurning a clear opportunity, but the final whistle ended the tier, with the hosts taking a strong lead to Anfield next week.
