Bayern Munich regained the Bundesliga title this afternoon – giving Harry Kane his first major trophy – after closest challengers Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Freiburg.

Leverkusen, who claimed the crown last season for the first time in their history under Xabi Alonso, had to win to keep the race alive but found themselves 2-0 down after a Maximilian Eggestein strike and an own goal from Piero HincapiΓ© either side of half-time.

Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah scored to bring Leverkusen level but it was too little, too late as Freiburg held on to prompt celebrations in Bavaria.

Bayern almost got the job done yesterday but were denied a win at RB Leipzig by a last-minute goal from Yussuf Poulsen in a pulsating 3-3 draw.

Kane missed that game through suspension but the England captain can now reflect on breaking his duck after a stellar career that had failed to result in silverware.

The former Tottenham striker moved to Bayern in the summer of 2023 but, despite a brilliant debut season in Germany on a personal level in which he scored 36 league goals, the club could not retain the domestic title.

His 24 goals this season have had a positive effect, though, with Bayern now eight points ahead of Leverkusen with just two games remaining.
