Chelsea v Los Angeles FC match preview
Less than three weeks after their Conference League triumph, Chelsea return to action in Atlanta against MLS team Los Angeles FC in the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup.
“We had a few days off after the final,” Blues manager Enzo Maresca told Chelsea’s website. “But then we returned and we started to prepare for this competition.
“[The turnaround] was so quick and we needed to be ready. The good thing is that we finished the Premier League and the Conference League in the way we all wanted, so now we have arrived with a good feeling and are fully focused on this competition.”

Midfielder Enzo Fernandez has described the competition as “very important”. “It will be a beautiful tournament and lots of clubs from all over the world will be there,’ added the Argentina international.
“I think people will really enjoy it. It will be a great event. Every time we travel with Chelsea, there are Chelsea fans there, anywhere in the world.
“It’s really nice to see them supporting us. Hopefully we can bring some joy to the people who will be cheering us on in America.”
LAFC played their first game in 2018 and have a notable Chelsea alumni among their ranks in Olivier Giroud, who won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge between 2018 and 2021.

“Every section of club has changed a lot,” Giroud said of the Premier League side. “I played only with two of [their players] now, Reece James and [Trevoh] Chalobah.
“It’s a great feeling because when I cross people in the street, even in the US, they are big Arsenal and Chelsea fans and they tell me a lot of compliments regarding my time [at the clubs].
“They’re very thankful and grateful and so am I… [Chelsea] will be always in my heart, so it’s going to be a special game.”
LAFC Co-President and General Manager John Thorrington said it is “right to view us as underdogs”. “That said, it is something that we can embrace,” he added.
“What I hope is that Chelsea and [Group D rivals] Flamengo and Esperance and all these teams walk off the field with a great level of respect as to the quality of our players and the intensity and the commitment of our players.
“And if we walk off the pitch every game with that, we will be proud and I trust the results will fall our way.”

Chelsea v Los Angeles FC prediction
The English club are hot favourites to win against opponents who have won seven of their first 16 MLS games of the season, sitting fifth in the Western Conference.
There is an element of unpredictability around whether teams will be at full strength and full throttle at the Club World Cup – perhaps even more so for teams who have ended their seasons – but Chelsea should have enough to win 3-1.
One player to watch could be Denis Bouanga, who won the MLS Golden Boot with LAFC in 2023 and has eight goals and five assists in the league in 2025.
Gabon international Bouanga’s total of 78 attempts in the MLS is 10 more than next-nearest players Lionel Messi and Hany Mukhtar.
