Sky Sports News say Nicolas Anelka quit West Brom | Anelka is actually off as his agent died

Incredible news broke on Thursday afternoon on Sky Sports News: new West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka has walked out on the Baggies, and the Frenchman has announced his retirement from professional football.

If the story is accurate, then the news come as a major embarrassment for the club.

West Brom have repeatedly defended signing the bad-boy Frenchman, with Albion manager Steve Clarke going as far as to lambaste journalists who painted Anelka out to be a bad apple only last week.

Just seven days ago WBA boss Clarke told a packed room of press:

There is no downside with Nicolas. I find him a very engaging character and good person. He has been great in the group here. He has come in here and is already a favourite. He is a good person.

He is up for it. If he wasn’t up for it, he would have chosen to go somewhere else for an easier life and still pick up decent money. Everyone keeps knocking on about his age, but he is the fittest 34-year-old I have seen. He is a fabulous athlete.

The only problem with the Sky Sports News report is that it was immediately branded as false amid new information saying Anelka had been given time off by WBA for compassionate reasons.

Fuelled by a statement from the club, news filtered out that Anelka had been temporarily excused from first team duties because his agent died unexpectedly.

Nicolas Anelka has only been a West Brom player for 49 days. The 34-year-old has made just one appearance for Albion against Southampton, playing 84 minutes.
