The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash between the Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso is set for Tuesday night in Marrakech

Ivory Coast’s group-stage campaign at AFCON 2025 was largely a success, with the defending champions topping Group F on goal difference.

The Elephants opened their tournament on December 24 with a 1-0 win over Mozambique, courtesy of an early second-half strike from Amad Diallo.

That was followed by a 1-1 draw against Cameroon on December 28, with Diallo again finding the net before the Indomitable Lions equalised.

Ivory Coast’s final group match on December 31 proved the most dramatic, as they recovered from an early 2-0 deficit against Gabon inside the opening 21 minutes, before Jean-Philippe Krasso pulled a goal back prior to half time and late strikes from Evann Guessand and Bazoumana Toure, the latter in stoppage time, completed a 3-2 win to secure top spot.

Historically, Ivory Coast boast a strong AFCON pedigree as three-time champions who consistently progress deep into the tournament, a record reinforced by an ongoing seven-match unbeaten run at AFCON finals, including four wins.

In head-to-head terms, Ivory Coast have faced Burkina Faso 20 times across all competitions and hold the advantage with nine wins to Burkina Faso’s three, alongside eight draws, while remaining unbeaten in their two previous AFCON meetings, drawing in 2010 and winning 2-0 in 2012.

Burkina Faso’s route to the round of 16 featured steady progress in Group E, beginning with a 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea on December 24, with Lassina Traore among the goals.

A 1-0 defeat to Algeria followed, but qualification was confirmed on December 31 with a 2-0 win over Sudan.

Ivory Coast have a clean bill of health ahead of this fixture after Fae rotated heavily in the final group match against Gabon.

Yahia Fofana is expected to return in goal, with Guela Doue, Odilon Kossounou, Evan Ndicka and Ghislain Konan forming the defensive unit.

In midfield, Ibrahim Sangare, Seko Fofana and Franck Kessie are set to be restored, while Amad Diallo, Yan Diomande and Evann Guessand are all pushing for recalls in attack.

For Burkina Faso, goalkeeper Herve Koffi is a doubt after being forced off at half-time during the 2-0 win over Sudan with a thigh injury, having been replaced by Kilian Nikiema.

Cyriaque Irie is also a doubt after being substituted in the same match with a suspected injury.
