Regis Le Bris hails ‘special’ Sunderland win as Black Cats win again on European return

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris hailed a “very special” night for the club after the Black Cats continued their return to European football with a dramatic late win.

Sunderland left it until the closing stages to secure the three points, sparking wild celebrations among their travelling supporters.

Le Bris praised his young squad for showing the belief to keep pushing until the final whistle, insisting the experience would prove valuable as they continue to develop.

“We’re back in Europe 53 years later and winning this game right at the end is very special,” Le Bris said.

“It is a symbol, and important, I think for many reasons. The first one is for our club and our fans, they were fantastic once again.

“Also we are growing up and we need experiences, and I think the team showed this belief until the very end. It is important for us to show this mindset.”

The Sunderland boss also highlighted the youthfulness of his squad, revealing that the average age of his starting XI was just over 22.

“Absolutely. The starting 11 was 22 point something this evening, which shows that this team is young with huge potential, but potential is about getting experience to learn and grow.

“Sometimes it’s tough, you have to expect that. Showing consistency and discipline.”

Le Bris also reserved praise for Noah Sadiki, who got on the scoresheet during the contest.

The midfielder’s attacking contribution particularly pleased his manager, who believes he has the qualities to become an even greater threat in the final third.

“It’s important for him to step up and add this layer to his game because he has the ability to hit the box, to dribble, to shout to make key passes.

“Now it’s the next layer, so I hope it’s a starting point.”
